POEM: Sign of Things to Come

GOD LEADS US THROUGH DARK TUNNELS
in purple flickering neon
(as if it isn’t sure;)
And I swear I’ve never seen a damn thing look so lonely
(But maybe it’s just the misery talking.)
stuck upon some haunted aluminium poles
somewhere between Lost and Nowhere,
waiting for devils that aren’t real
to rise up from the golden fields
and caper, vulgar and erect –
For wasted scarecrows to totter from their stakes
with painful twisted smiles and waving arms,
so this sign of blinking promises
can nod sagely,
and thrust its bible forward like a gun
or a peace offering:
“God leads ups through dark tunnels”
Baked beneath the Western sun to shades of amber and brown
blinking all incongruent under a sweeping sky,
on its perch above the endless empty road
Pleading
Shouting
Commanding
Screaming in some octave high above human hearing
GOD GOD
G
OD
(leads us through dark tunnels)
Just believe
if we know what’s good for us
(honest injun, that’s the truth)
And when it’s left behind it lingers
Blessing
Warning
God leads us through dark tunnels –
Don’t look behind you.
