The Gang of Five

I have this little band of characters I don’t know what to do with.

I found them one October in the run-up to NaNoWriMo. I decided to draw some tarot cards and base the characters on the cards, and wound up with three young women, a boy of about 15, and an older ex-soldier fellow. They’re rather interbellum in nature, of varying classes, and for the life of me I can’t find a story to put them in.

They wouldn’t mind being in any of them. They all of them but the soldier love a good story. But that’s just the problem: it feels to me like children playing pretend. There’s never a solid plot behind them. The soldier ends up following them around for no good reason. Their original story was set in a mental hospital, until I discovered that there’s not much you can do with a mental hospital and they broke out and commandeered an airship.

Actually, it might work as a girl’s home or something. Perhaps a boarding school. Jimmy could be the gardener or the caretaker’s son or just some scruffy kid from over the wall who brings them sweets and dirty comics.

Hang on I have to write this down.

So that’s a setting I can use. I don’t know what I want to happen in the plot, though. That will take some thinking.
