Dat sweet sweet paper quality

You may have noticed I did not blog last Friday. I confess to you that I did not manage my time well, and didn’t anticipate being as tired as I was that evening. This week I’ll plan better. I have all of Wednesday to get something up and scheduled for you.

Shall I fill you in on my university adventures? I haven’t taken a writing class before, and it’s an interesting experience. It’s strange to sit in class and have the tutor say, “ten minutes free writing”. That’s not something I’ve been instructed to do in class before. I’ve done it, plenty of times, in margins or notebooks, scribbling odd sentences of nothing much, something for part of my brain to do while listening to the lecture. So being told, OK, everyone write now, that was new. I felt a thrill, like being allowed to do something forbidden. You mean you want me to write a stream of consciousness in the middle of class??

Creative non-fiction is the subject of the hour, and I’m not sure, precisely, if I’ve got it right. Are blog posts creative non-fiction? Am I doing it now? I am all unsure whether this counts or that counts, or if I’m “doing it right”.

The exciting requirement for writing class is that we must keep a notebook. (My eyes gleam with anticipation.) A notebook for words and sentences, things we’ve overheard and things we’ve seen, quotes from others, ideas. Of course my eyes lit up at the excuse to buy myself a new notebook, and I found a Leuchtturm1917 in silver, which is well suited to the purpose. In particular I expect the contents pages to be useful in the future, when it comes to tracking down “that one exercise I vaguely remember from 8 weeks ago”.

You fools! thought I, cackling like a mad villain. You know not what you have unleashed!

Today, I sketched a sparrow.
